Blackened Stainless Steel

DMD has been producing blackened stainless steel for architectural applications for decades. The beauty of this material’s stable patina is matched by the strength and corrosion resistance of its stainless steel subsurface.

Blackened stainless steel gives you a deep, dark finish without the concern of long-term staining.

At Dissimilar Metal Design, that process is our DMD_180 Series finish. It’s proprietary, repeatable, and tested. The result is stainless steel that arrives with a deep black surface, stabilized and sealed. The color is consistent, and the texture is tuned to the needs of the project.

Why choose blackened stainless steel?

The main virtue of the parent stainless steel is its strength and corrosion resistance. And instead of waiting for time and exposure to shape a surface like copper or weathering steel, this patina is created at our facility through a controlled, multi-stage process.

This finish is more than cosmetic. It resists corrosion and uneven weathering. Each part is expertly fabricated and welded under our supervision before finishing, which keeps the look uniform across large assemblies and on all visible facets.

Designers choose blackened stainless when they want the richness of dark metal without the maintenance headaches of paint or coatings. It works inside or outside, for cladding, wall panels, railings, and custom architectural elements. Because it’s stainless at the core, the material retains its strength and long service life while carrying a finish that feels warm, modern, and refined.
