Processed Surfaces

Whether the design calls for laser-cut, perforated, formed, machined, engraved materials, our facilities are here to create your vision.

In the realm of architectural design and metal fabrication, the interplay between form and function takes on new dimensions through the ingenious use of surface processing. From intricate patterns of cut out metal to bumped and textured surfaces, we can create visual interest that not only captivates the eye but also serves a myriad of practical purposes.

Our team at Dissimilar Metal Design is capable of a wide range of processes. We’re also always interested to increase our breadth of scope and talents. From enhancing aesthetics to optimizing performance, our surfaces stand as a testament to a merging of creativity and engineering in the built environment.

Featured Projects: Perforated and Processed Metals

The creation of perforated surfaces requires a delicate balance of aesthetics, engineering precision, and material expertise. Architects collaborate with metal fabricators to define perforation densities, hole sizes, and patterns that align with the project’s design intent and functional requirements. Advanced fabrication techniques, including laser cutting and CNC machining, ensure the accuracy and consistency of perforated patterns across large-scale installations.

  • Destination Crenshaw
Dissimilar Metal Design is providing design-engineering and custom-formed metal with perforations for Destination Crenshaw in LA.
  • ECHO Global
For the new Echo Global Logistics headquarters in Downtown Chicago, the design team at Cannon Design brought Dissimilar Metal Design in to consult, engineer, and supply a unique entryway spatial divider.
  • Syracuse International Airport
With a facade composed of a unitized perforated DMD weathering steel, this airport’s redesign from Gensler boldly brands the Syracuse branch of the NY Airport System.

Laser-cut metal for WWII Memorial in France by Dissimilar

Dissimilar Metal Design provided the laser-cut weathering steel surfaces for the U.S. Naval Combat Demolition Units Scouts & Raiders Monument Park designed by Studio X. The memorial honors the predecessors of today’s Navy SEALs and Special Boat Crews, and makes use of weathering steel with cut-out stencil lettering, (pictured above).

Unveiling the Beauty of Perforation

Perforated surfaces are a gateway to unleashing creativity in architectural metalwork. The deliberate arrangement of perforations transforms solid metal sheets into captivating canvases that dance with light, cast intriguing shadows, and interact with the surrounding environment. Each perforated pattern tells a story—a narrative of design intent, cultural inspiration, or functional innovation.

Perforated Metal: Design and Function

While the aesthetic allure of perforated surfaces is undeniable, their functional value is equally compelling. Consider the following ways in which perforated metal elevates architectural projects:

  • Light and Shadow Play: Perforations allow controlled diffusion of light, creating mesmerizing interplays of light and shadow. These dynamic patterns bring an ever-changing visual experience, enhancing the ambiance of both interior and exterior spaces.
  • Ventilation and Acoustics: Perforated surfaces find their place in facilitating airflow and managing acoustics. Whether as exterior cladding or ceiling panels, they strike a harmonious balance between form and function.
  • Privacy and Sun Control: Architectural perforations offer privacy solutions that are anything but conventional. The precise arrangement of holes allows occupants to enjoy natural light while maintaining privacy and reducing solar heat gain.
  • Artful Screening: Perforated screens serve as elegant partitions that demarcate spaces while preserving an open, inviting feel. These screens add an artistic touch while maintaining visual connectivity.
  • Facade Dynamics: Perforated facades create a dynamic exterior aesthetic that responds to varying angles of light and viewpoints. This interactivity lends depth and vibrancy to building exteriors.
  • Branding and Identity: Custom perforated patterns can incorporate logos, symbols, or artistic motifs, allowing architectural elements to double as brand ambassadors and identity markers.
