DesignMilk: House for a Collector
In an article in DesignMilk published in January 2025, the author Caroline Williamson shares photos and insights into the natural materials selected for its construction.
Dissimilar Metal Design provided the weathering steel cladding for House for a Collector, a striking residence in Birmingham, Michigan which was designed by Khanna Schultz. The home, built around a central courtyard, integrates a rare Porsche collection into its architectural design. Weathering steel introduces warmth and texture against the industrial precast concrete, developing a natural patina over time that enhances the building’s connection to its surroundings.

The material palette balances raw utility with refined luxury, featuring weathered steel, blackened steel, polished concrete, and pre-finished wood. Sustainability is a key focus, with a high-performance building envelope, triple-glazed windows, and a geothermal system ensuring efficiency. Thoughtful details, like a motorized whiskey display concealed behind a steel-clad wall, add functionality and theatricality.
