The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Spirit Square Renovation is a tightly coordinated effort involving Dissimilar Metal Design (DMD), Advanced Exterior Systems (AES) to elevate shipping and receiving areas on two prominent public-square-facing buildings into sculptural, visually expressive elements.

Designed by architecture firm Snøhetta, the project transforms service zones into crafted architectural features that retain full utility while enhancing the character of Charlotte’s new library.

The project uses DMD Weathering Steel to underscore the project’s advanced fabrication requirements, including 3D-formed panel geometries, precise datum control, and complex alignment across multiple structures. The work integrates sophisticated perforation and patina strategies to create layered visual depth while maintaining strict dimensional accuracy. These systems visually unify sloped, angled, and multi-directional conditions that shape the exterior of Charlotte’s new library.

The result is a precisely fabricated, highly coordinated assembly of sculptural weathering-steel forms — transforming formerly utilitarian mechanical areas into expressive architectural elements that elevate the overall identity of Charlotte’s new library.
