DMD Weathering Steel

Dissimilar partnered with Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) and Structure Tone to oversee the detailed fabrication of 25,000 square feet of custom interior steel architectural elements with concealed fastener attachment system for Google’s innovative workspace at Pier 57 in NYC. Leveraging our expertise in architectural metal fabrication and patina finishing, Dissimilar Metal Design lent a hand in re-imagining the aesthetics and functionality of this iconic location.

Pier 57 Interior Steel

The weathering steel used throughout the interior of Pier 57 is a pre-weathered steel product made by Dissimilar Metal Design. This includes the outcropping steel offices, the railing and staircase cladding, and includes embedded lighting. The Pier 57 interior steel product is made from weathering steel, also known as Corten, a material which oxidizes in similar fashion to iron, but will not deteriorate like iron after it reaches a mature state.

Nestled within the Google workspace, one can find circulation areas as well as impromptu workspaces and meeting places, all carefully crafted using our DMD Weathering Steel. These spaces seamlessly integrate functional architectural elements with greenery, creating a harmonious blend of handcrafted form and thoughtful function throughout the environment.

From complex facade fabrication to interior use, our shop’s 360 capability ranges from a multitude of fabrication options and engineering services. We can assist with simple sizing and attachment design support to fully delegated design and engineering packages for complex scopes. We also have a network of trusted installers that we can call upon as needed.
