The expansion and modernization of the University of Massachusetts Lowell Olney Science Center represents a major investment in the university’s North Campus, adding new academic, research, and student-focused spaces while reshaping the building’s public presence. As part of this effort, Dissimilar Metal Design is providing the project’s custom copper material.

Designed by Goody Clancy, the project includes a 51,300-square-foot addition alongside the renovation of approximately 44,600 square feet of existing interior space, with phased openings beginning in 2027.

A defining architectural feature of the addition is a dramatic, two-story cantilevered wing extending over the bus loop and adjacent pedestrian paths. This volume is clad in patinated copper panels with a green-blue hue, giving the building a distinctive material identity that will continue to evolve over time.

Dissimilar Metal Design served as a patinated copper supplier of the for these sculptural copper forms — transforming formerly utilitarian mechanical areas into expressive architectural elements that elevate the overall identity of Charlotte’s new library.
