Dissimilar Metal Design is contributing to the next phase of the Kelowna International Airport’s transformation—an 8,000-square-metre terminal expansion that redefines regional airport design through its commitment to sustainability, material integrity, and construction innovation.
Dissimilar’s role focuses on the exterior weathering steel elements, working closely with the design team to deliver a cladding system that reflects the airport’s modernist heritage while standing up to the rigors of British Columbia’s climate. This preweathered facade is stabilized for long-term performance and integrates seamlessly with the hybrid mass timber and steel structure. The material’s natural patina adds visual depth and a durable protective layer, preventing staining and eliminating the need for paint or coatings.

Just as the timber structure celebrates the Okanagan Valley’s natural resources, Dissimilar’s work emphasizes the expressive possibilities of metal—delivering a tactile, honest finish that complements the architectural rhythm of the expansion’s “waffle” roof and daylight-filled terminal interior.
From design-assist to detail coordination, the Dissimilar approach is driven by precision, collaboration, and a commitment to material performance over time.
